When people think of our CEO, Tom Leonard, they often remark on his charisma, empathy, and approachability. They point to how Tom’s creative thinking and his ability to introduce new ideas has been a constant source of the many innovative products and services that have enabled BTECH to remain successful over the past 35 years.
Before joining BTECH, Tom lived what many would describe as an adventurous life which included working on geological research projects in Hawaii, running mining operations in Columbia, and working on the Big Dig Project in Boston.
When Tom came to work at BTECH, he understood that to be an effective leader, he would need to understand all aspects of BTECH from top to bottom. Tom worked in production assembling wire harnesses for installation, he worked in the field servicing and installing systems, he represented BTECH at industry conferences and achieved remarkable success in sales. Tom also traveled to Korea, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and Israel to expand the company’s international presence. It was not until the late 90’s that Tom started taking over the reins and running the day-to-day operations.
When Tom took over leadership, he had the passion, drive and background needed to usher in a new era of innovation. His willingness to try new ventures, launch new monitoring products, and establish forward-thinking customer services has kept BTECH apart from all other industry competitors.
The simple fact Tom affectionately refers to all at BTECH as his “BTECH Family” provides clear evidence of his genuine affection toward each employee. He has a remarkable ability to not only recognize and nurture the potential in those around him but to also motivate them to reach new levels of achievement. His people-oriented approach allows him to connect with individuals on multiple levels and build a solid foundation of trust. His open-door policy encourages employees to approach him with questions and engage in open discussions. He actively seeks out others’ thoughts and opinions, valuing and considering their input.
Tom is also a strong advocate for helping others, actively supporting various charitable causes, and serving as a Board Member of the Carpenters Workshop.
Tom graduated with a degree in geology from Dartmouth College. He and his wife of over 30 years, Karen, share a passion for horseback riding, skiing, hiking, and making wine together. Tom also enjoys riding motorcycles, a hobby that earned him his membership in the Iron Butt Association, a US-based organization of over 75,000 members that is dedicated to safe motorcycle riding.
